DIGITS Pep Talk

Well, we have now made the complete switch from the traditional classroom textbook to our new math curriculum, Digits.  Digits is a web-based math program complete with interactive lessons, math manipulatives, intervention lessons and homework assignments.

This program is going to be a positive influence in your ability to understand and utilize math in ways beyond basic computation (3 x 4).  I think you have already noticed the amount of reading and problem solving involved in this new math program, right?  It is a lot, but it is going to be well worth it down the road.  You may not feel that way right NOW, but everything has a learning curve.  Meaning, at first many new things are hard to adjust too.  This is one of them for you and for me, but I already notice an improvement in your basic number sense.

Anyway, we will keep working and it WILL be HARDER than any math you have done before.  Just think of how much smarter you will be in May than you would have been otherwise.  What is that saying?  Oh yes, "NO PAIN, NO GAIN."

DIGITS!!!  Remember, Digits will only run on Internet Explorer and Safari.  When in doubt, take home the paper copy I offer to you.

TGIF - ENOUGH SAID!

Get outside and burn off some energy this weekend.  Come back Monday ready to Rock -N- Roll.  Homeroom door decorating contest for Drug Free Week.  What will our theme be?  Can we continue to keep ahead of Knebel's team in IXL?  I think so!  Work those math problems people we like to win!

Blocks One and Two - Try This!!!

http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/decimals/solve_word_problems.html
Read through the problems and the correct answers.

Then,  go to the bottom and complete those problems.

Block Three - Try This!!!

http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol5/compare_order.html

Read through the page.
Then, try the problems at the bottom.

The last thing you should do is go ALL the way to the bottom and click on the ABSOLUTE VALUE lesson.  Read, then try those problems.

Raise your hands if you have questions.  I will float around the room assisting and clarifying as needed.

Advanced Math Fraction Review for Quiz Today

Hey guys, watch this video today right before you take the quiz.

Don't forget to place all of your answers in SIMPLEST FORM!!!  When you are comparing ratios you would leave them improper, but this is a basic fraction concept quiz and any improper fraction must be made into a mixed number.

Good luck!

Comparing Decimals Introduction on Screen Chomp

http://www.screenchomp.com/t/Cr2j8I50RVdN

The trick to comparing decimals is to STACK THEM ON TOP OF EACH OTHER.  LINE UP THE DECIMALS to keep all of the digits in order based on their value.  Then you compare each digit, one place at a time (like you would for ABC order!).

Now, if you are a sloppy writer, unlike me who has beautiful writing (quit laughing) you can take your lined notebook paper and turn it on its side. Use the blue lines to keep your place values all lined up.

The race is on to increase the followers....

Students checking in for the 2011/2012 school year are encouraged to become a "follower" of the blog and earn 3 extra credit points.  You might also like to tag it as a favorite or add to your bar for easier access.  Soon my room will be wired for sound which will allow me to video lessons and upload them to the blog.  Students would be able to review the lesson if they needed extra help or were absent.  That is very exciting and will dramatically improve the quality of the video that you will currently find on the blog.

REMEMBER, the more followers I get the more consistent I intend to be with my lessons and updates.  This is a site for you, the student.  I also hope to add a weekly student news feature to the blog to keep you updated on the team happenings.
